Longshaw Estate and Bolehill Quarry
Longshaw Estate and Bolehill Quarry and Padley Gorge 10km (6mile)
Service Description
Join us on this stunning walk starting from Longshaw Lodge NT, which is a great place to discover spectacular views of the Peak District, ancient woodlands, parkland and heather moorland. We’ll take in: The woods of the Longshaw Estate before joining the River Derwent for a while, then heading up Bolehill Quarry, this is now a quiet corner of Longshaw, covered by silver birch trees and a haven for wildlife. But 120 years ago the landscape was dominated by an industrial quarry, producing stone for the nearby Howden and Derwent Dams. After spending some time searching for millstones we'll head through Padley Gorge, ancient woodland and waterfalls, to the Lodge which has a second-hand bookshop, toilets and of course a café. Walk Details Time 9:30 - 13:00 Distance approx. 10km (6miles) Elevation Gain approx. 270m Paths are a mixture of woodland paths, heather moorland and bridleways What to expect. There is a short warm-up before the walk and stretches after it. Tips to help you get the most out of your walk 1 Suitable clothing and footwear, layers are best (Denim and heavy cotton tend to absorb and hold water so are not ideal and are likely to be turned away, especially on a longer walk) 2 A small rucksack - to put layers/waterproofs in (Ideally with chest straps) 3 Light refreshments (water, fruit juice etc) 4 Your mobile phone in case of last minute changes 5 Walk leaders mobile number 07718314966 6 You can add pole hire etc to your walk when booking. Dogs - If you bring a dog it must be on a lead and under control at all times, I use a harness with mine and happy to offer advice on fit and purchasing options. You must be able to help your dog over stiles etc where needed. Route changes may occur on the day due to path closures, weather issues, speed or welfare of the group. Finally I will always have a First Aid Kit in a small green drysac in my rucksack, but you may choose to bring your own Bite and Sting Cream, Suncream etc. Use S11 7TZ to find Longshaw, and then please use brown signs to navigate to the car parks. Whilst we do understand that sometimes it is not possible to make a walk / class, please be aware that we do operate a No refund policy if you give us less than 24 hours` notice.
